The five castes, from the highest to the lowest, are Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.
Sleep-Teaching: Sleep is considered an inefficient use of time, and individuals are required to participate in a sleep-teaching program that reinforces the values and beliefs of the society.
Soma: In this society, Soma is distributed by the government to the citizens as a way to maintain social control and stability. The drug is used by the citizens to escape reality, experience pleasure, and relieve stress.
Literature Banned: Literature and Shakespeare's works are banned as they are considered to be a threat to the stability of the society. The government fears that exposure to literature and art will encourage people to think independently and question the values and beliefs of the society.
Afraid of Natural Childbirth: The characters in the novel are generally afraid of witnessing natural childbirth and view it as a taboo and primitive experience. This fear is a result of the conditioning that they have received from birth, which has taught them to value stability, efficiency, and conformity above all else.
Want to Have the Choice to be Unhappy: There are some characters who express a desire to experience deeper emotions and to have the freedom to make choices, even if those choices may lead to unhappiness.
Numbness to Death: Represents a critique of the dangers of suppressing and denying human emotions and the importance of allowing individuals to experience the full range of emotions, including those related to death and loss.
